Tooth Extraction Q & A

Why are extractions sometimes necessary?

Permanent teeth are meant to last a lifetime, but for many reasons, this doesn't always happen. For example, you might need to have a tooth extracted because it's too seriously broken to keep. Decay, trauma, and lifestyle can all contribute to needing teeth pulled.

Your dentist at Arya Dental may recommend an extraction if you're dealing with one of the following situations:

  • Risk of infection from an unsuccessful root canal
  • Risk of infection during chemotherapy or an organ transplant
  • Advanced periodontal (gum) disease
  • Extra or crowded teeth
  • No room for third molars (wisdom teeth)

What should I expect from an extraction procedure?

There are simple extractions and surgical extractions. Simple extractions are reserved for teeth that can be seen above the gum line. During this type of procedure, an experienced dentist at Arya Dental loosens your tooth with a small instrument and lifts it out with dental forceps.

A surgical extraction is a bit more complicated. The tooth may not have come through the surface of your gums, as is common with wisdom teeth, or it may have broken off at your gum line. To perform a surgical extraction the dentist will need to make a small cut in your gum to lift the tooth out. It may be necessary to remove some of the bone around your tooth as well so it can be thoroughly extracted.

Your dentist gives you a local anesthetic before both a surgical extraction and simple extraction, so you don’t feel any pain. If multiple teeth are extracted at the same time, as is routine with wisdom teeth extraction, your dentist may give you a general anesthetic so you don’t feel pain and you sleep through the entire procedure.

How long does it take to heal from a tooth extraction?

Depending on how many teeth you had extracted and your specific circumstances, the first stages of the healing process usually occur within one or two weeks. In the spaces where your teeth used to be, new gum tissue and bone grow. You may encounter difficulty chewing or general aches and pains on your way to recovery, depending on the scope of your dental operation.

Because everyone's circumstances are different, it’s best to contact Arya Dental to book a consultation so you can discover your options and any necessary follow-up procedures like crowns or dental implants.
